No, a VPN is not required, however, the Samsung IP phone will work with VPN.

My IP Phone has One-way Audio. What causes that situation?
This could be several different issues all pertaining to your firewall. If this problem arises, check the firewall configuration and compatibility.

What Power-Over Ethernet (PoE) Standard does the Samsung IP Station utilize?
Samsung uses the IEEE 802.3af Power Over Ethernet (PoE) Standard.

The Samsung IP Station is showing a ‘validation error.’ What does that mean?
This error means that the phone is connected to the Samsung Telephone System but is not authorized to operate, typically this is caused by an invalid or incorrect user ID or password.

The Remote Samsung IP Station stays in ‘Binding Mode.’ What does that mean?
If the station has been set to DHCP mode, it is either not receiving an IP address via a DHCP server or the DHCP server is full or on another network segment.

How will 911 work with my remote IP Station?
The Samsung IP Station will utilize the 911 resources of the telephone system that it is connected to. Any IP phone users not located at the same physical address as the telephone system should be aware of this limitation and have access to a local line for emergency use. How much Bandwidth do we need for an IP call with the Samsung System?
